Safety is the most important component of road traffic. But it is even more important to know that the smallest and most valuable passenger sits in a car seat and is under reliable protection. When choosing a child car seat, it is not the style or the color scheme that plays the most important role. “Expert Price” has compiled a rating of the best child car seats, based on the results of crash tests of leading automotive magazines and auto clubs in the world. Read about Top child car seats.
🏆 Rating of the top child car seats based on crash test results
To compile a rating for car seats, we used the results of crash tests from the following sources:
- ADAC is a German auto club that annually conducts crash tests of child car seats, evaluates models according to the following parameters: protection, ergonomics, environmental friendliness, care;
- VTI – tests are carried out by the Swedish Research Institute of Road Transport; the program is called Plus Test, which evaluates the load on the child’s neck at the time of the collision participation in the program is voluntary, and the testing conditions are one of the most stringent, only child seats, which are installed facing against the movement, can pass the test;
- ANWB – Dutch Automobile Association, annually tests car seats, the evaluation principle is similar to ADAC;
- TCS is a Swiss auto club that evaluates seats on two dimensions: protection and use;
- STIFTUNG WARENTEST is an authoritative German magazine that conducts independent consumer tests, tests car seats together with ADAC, evaluates the protection and comfort of use of the seat;
- RACC – Spanish auto club, the assessment is carried out on four parameters, like the ADAC;
- Autoreview is the largest magazine for motorists in the USA, the assessment was carried out according to several parameters: protection of the head, chest, abdomen, legs, spine (separately), and ease of use;
- Autoliitto – Finnish auto club, the assessment principle is similar to ADAC;
- OAMTC – Austrian Automobile Club, has been testing car seats since 2001, the evaluation principle is similar to ADAC.
In addition, when compiling the rating, we paid attention to customer reviews, which can best tell about the convenience and ease of use of the car seat.
New standard R-129 or i-Size. Start of implementation in the EU – summer 2013. Children up to 15 months of age must sit strictly against the movement of the vehicle (currently only up to 9 months). Requirements for side-impact protection are significantly increased – side crash tests are mandatory for model certification. Also, Isofix is mandatory. At the same time, a clearer height classification has been introduced, which facilitates the selection of a car seat. The transition to the new standard will be gradual and does not replace the current standard, for the safety of users and manufacturers. The two standards will thus be in force simultaneously for several years. The provisional date of abolition of the old R 44 and the final transition to the new i-Size standard is 2018. 2014

Hi, I’m many a baby lift Scout here to show you how to install the Maxi cozy Mico Max Plus Infant Car seat.
Now there are three install options for the seat, installing the car seat with the base with latch or with the base with the seat belt, or installing this car seat without the base with just the seat belt.
A few basics right up front know that you’ll always be installing this car seat rear facing, and it’s important that the seat is level with the ground on when placed in your car.
Also with this car seat, whenever it’s installed in the car seat with or without the base, you must have the handle in the upright position.
Okay, so Let’s talk about using the base first before placing the base for either a latch or seat belt install, know that the Mico Max Plus Base is equipped with load leg that is designed to extend out from the bottom of the base to the floor of your car.
This is an added and optional safety bonus designed to absorb impact in the event of a crash.
You’ll want to pull that out before lacking the base for an install, and you’ll adjust it along the way.
When placing the base in your car, Center it in the rearfacing position on the seat that’s equipped with either latch bars or the seatbelt you’ll need.
Once it’s placed, you may have to adjust the incline to be sure you’re parallel with the ground.
There’s a handy angle level indicator to help you double check here.
If you do need to move up or down, you can squeeze the base recline handle on the back of the base to lift or lower it and get you to that green.
If you’ve pulled out the load leg, you’ll be happy to know that as multiple legs positions, and you might start adjusting here as you’re situating the seat.
Once you’ve secured the latch or seat belt for the base, you’ll rotate the load leg completely forward, squeeze the buttons on the leg to pull it down until it meets the floor of your vehicle, and then release.
You can lift the front of the base while holding the load leg in place to lock it into position.
All right, so now Let’s get into the specifics of installing. First, I’ll show you how to install it with the base with Latch or UAS.
Now Latch stands for lower anchors and Tethers for children, and UAS stands for Universal Anchorage System.
You’ll use latch or UAS instead of the vehicle deep belt.
Just check your vehicle manual to see which seating positions are equipped for this.
First, remove the latches from their storage location on the base by pressing the red release button on each connector and then pulling the connectors out of the openings.
Once you’ve position the base correctly, you’ll loosen the latch belt by pushing on the adjuster button and then attach it to the vehicle’s latch farms on both sides of the base.
You want to listen for a click and then free the free end of the latch strap through the belt path openings.
Hold the base down firmly and pull the strap up to tighten.
Check the tightness by wiggling the base at the belt paths, and it shouldn’t move more than an inch.
Here, if you’re using the load leg, now is the time to move it completely forward and put it into place, and at this point all you have to do is add the baby in their seat.
Now Let’s talk about using the seatbelt instead of latch.
You can use either a lap belt or a lap and shoulder belt with or without the base, but Here’s the Bay roll for installing with seat belts, the belt must not loosen after tightening, which means there needs to be a way to block the vehicle
belt. The manual outlines three ways you can be sure your seat belt stays tightened first and most preferred way is auto lock.
The Mico Max plus car seat base has us to use it.
You’ll locate the auto lock on the side of the base but does not have the vehicle bubble.
Slide only the shoulder portion of the belt into the auto lock like so now pull it back until you cannot pull it any further. So Here’s how to install the base with the car seat belt reminder, You do not need to use both latch and a seatbelt for installation.
One or the other is good.
Just tuck the latch straps away at this point to store the latch straps, attach the connectors to the attachments on the base.
Here, gently tighten to remove any slack.
Once you properly position the car seat base, route your vehicle seatbelt through the car seat base belt path and buckle it in.
Now firmly push down and towards the vehicle seatback while pushing shoulder her belt or free end of the lat belt to tighten. Be sure to use auto lock retractors or latch plates to be sure the belt is locked from there.
You’ll want to check belt tightness again by wiggling the base at the belt pass and making sure there’s no more than one inch of movement.
Okay, so last install to share with you today how to install the Car seat without using the Base Now, assuming you’ve checked your vehicles manual to confirm that your car is equipped with a car seat belt that locks with either a retractor or a latch plate, you’re going to install without the base with your child secured in the car seat, place the car seat in your vehicle rear facing.
Then you’ll check the level line on the side of the car seat to ensure it is parallel with the ground and adjust as needed.
Now grab the seat belt and rat it through the belt path on both sides of the car seat and buckle up.
Next, you’ll tighten everything up by laying your forearm across the childhood strain at the belt path, pulling the shoulders belt for free end of the Lat belt to time.
You can check your tightness by pulling on the middle of the seat from side to side and looking for less than one inch of wiggle.
Recheck the level line once again and make sure that it is parallel with the ground.
Now, you may need to reinstall the seat if it’s not level, or you can try placing a tightly rolled towel or foam pool noodle under the front of the childhood chain to help make that level line parallel with the ground.
And there you have it.

Use the foot on the side of the base to adjust the level, and the indicators will change from red to green when you’re good to go. Option one is the latch system within the Cars base. There are two Orange buttons which release a self retracting latch on either side. Pull each of those down and click them into the lower anchors. Check your installation, making sure that the base does not move more than one inch. Option two is the seafelt Lock Off system. Open the light blue lock off door. Thread the seatbelt through the base, making sure that the belt is tucked underneath the blue ear, and then push down on the base.
While pulling the seatbelt tight. The tightness indicator will turn from red to green, so then you can thread the top portion of the belt through the belt path and close the lock off door over the seatbelt again.
Check your installation, making sure that the base does not move more than one inch.
Now we’ll show you how to Buffle your baby into the car seat. The harness must be at or below your baby’s shoulders. Adjust the headrest height accordingly with a tab at the top. Buckle the car seat between the Lake and then pull the black into the straps at the bottom of the seat. Note that the crotch Buffle location is adjustable for your baby’s size as they grow.
Buckle the chest clip at armpit level. Double check the tightness of the harness by using the pinch test at your baby shoulder.

Next, we’re going to attach the car seat itself into the base just by clicking it in, making sure that it’s snug and ready to go. Overall, the upper Baby Mesa is a sleek and sturdy option for keeping your baby safe.

How to choose a child car seat?
Age group

The modern gradation takes into account the age and weight of the child, but does not yet take into account the height (although this is already laid down in the new European standard). There are 4 main groups of seats:
- Group 0. Child weighs less than 28 lbs, used from birth to 18 months. This is a baby carrier that mounts on a separate base facing backwards.
- Group 0+. It is used from birth up to about 1.5 years old, suitable for children weighing up to 39 lbs. Many models in this group have both forward and backward facing options.
- Group 1. Child’s weight from 19 to 39 lbs, age from 1 to 4 years, is set by the face in the direction of travel.
- Group 3. Weight from 48 to 79 lbs, age from 6 to 12 years. Placed by the face in the direction of travel.
In addition to the main ones, there are also universal groups with wider age and weight boundaries:
- 0/1 – from 0 to 4 years old, weight up to 39 lbs;
- 0/1/2 – up to 7 years old and up to 55 lbs;
- 0/1/2/3 – from birth to 79 lbs (12 years old);
- 1/2/3 – from 1 to 12 years old and from 19 to 79 lbs;
- 2/3 – from 4 to 12 years old and from 33 to 79 lbs.
Mount type
According to this criterion, all car seats can be divided into two groups:
- without fastening system (fixation on standard seat belts);
- with fastening system (Isofix or Latch).
Regular seat belt

Immediately, we note that some of the car seats are fastened ONLY with a regular belt, and for the other part, the belt is an additional fixator when used in conjunction with the Latch and Isofix systems. This usually depends on the age group, be sure to look for the exact information in the manufacturer’s description.
Plus belt fixation:
- versatility (there are standard belts in every car);
- saving money (chairs without a base are much cheaper).
But there are also serious disadvantages: firstly, such a chair will have to be fastened with belts every time, and this must be done correctly, strictly according to the instructions, which takes a lot of time. Secondly, the safety performance is seriously inferior to the Isofix and Latch systems. Thirdly, in some car models, the standard belts are not long enough to fasten the car seat.
Isofix

Isofix has been the international standard for attaching child car seats since 1995. All European cars have been equipped with this system since 2011. A real Isofix consists of two brackets at the base of the seat + 2 brackets for them in the car seat + telescopic stop or Top Tether anchor belt. The exception is 0+ products installed on a plastic base – they have brackets built into this base, and the car seat is attached to it with clamps against the direction of travel. Most manufacturers of 0+ seats offer a wide range of infant carrier bases, for example, Maxi-Cosi has FamilyFix, Easyfix, Babyfix, 3wayFix.
This attachment system reduces to zero the possibility of incorrect seat installation, and also increases the degree of protection for the child. In crash tests, the Isofix performs best in Category 0+ and Category 1 seats, provided that an anchor strap or telescopic leg is used. Note! In products for older ages, this system can no longer cope with the loads on its own, therefore it is used only in conjunction with a standard belt.
Latch
Latch is the American counterpart of Isofix with a similar design. The locks on chairs with the Latch system are located on elastic straps, rather than on rigid metal braces. This solution made it possible to make car seats lighter, cheaper and more convenient to install / remove (the locks can be clicked on and off in turn), and elastic belts significantly reduce the vibration transmitted from the body to the seat.

Safety standard

Internationally certified car seats are labeled with the codes ECE R44 (old standard) or ECE 129 (new). ECE 129 i-Size is an improved safety standard for child car seats, introduced on July 9, 2013. It aims to gradually replace ECE R44, which has been in force for over 30 years. Both standards are currently in operation, but leading manufacturers are actively switching to the production of products that comply with ECE 129 i-Size.
I-Size advantages:
- Transportation of children against the direction of travel is possible not until 9, but up to 15 months. Recall that the weight of a child’s head in the first months of life is disproportionately large, which can be dangerous during sudden braking. Therefore, babies should be transported “facing back” as long as possible.
- Mandatory use of Isofix – the simplest and most understandable car seat fastening system today.
- The classification is not by weight, but by the height of the child. Choosing a chair will now be as easy as choosing your clothes.
- Mandatory side impact test.
Products tested to any of these standards are of high quality and reliable. But by choosing a seat with the ECE 129 I-Size code, you are guaranteed to receive the most modern restraint system for transporting a child in a car.
When it comes to child car seats, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. The best car seat for your family will depend on a number of factors, including your child’s age, weight, and height.
To help you find the best car seat for your child, we’ve compiled a list of the top 15 child car seats based on crash test results and reviews.

There are a few different types of child car seats available on the market, so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your family. Here is a breakdown of the most popular types of child car seats to help you make the best decision for your family:
- Rear-Facing Car Seats
Rear-facing car seats are the safest option for young children. They should be used from birth until the child reaches the height or weight limit for the seat. Most rear-facing car seats have a five-point harness system, which helps keep the child securely in the seat in the event of a collision.
- Forward-Facing Car Seats
Forward-facing car seats can be used once the child outgrows the rear-facing seat. They typically have a five-point harness system and can be used until the child reaches the height or weight limit for the seat.
- Booster Seats
Booster seats are for children who have outgrown the height or weight limits for forward-facing car seats. Booster seats raise the child up so that the seat belt fits properly across the child’s chest and hips. Booster seats can be used until the child is big enough to use a seat belt without a booster seat.
- Seat Belts
Once the child is big enough, they can use a seat belt without a booster seat. The seat belt should be worn across the child’s chest and hips, and the shoulder strap should not be placed behind the child’s back or under their arm.
When choosing a child car seat, it is important to consider the child’s age, height, and weight. You should also consider the type of vehicle you have and whether you will be using the seat in multiple vehicles. It is also important to read the car seat manufacturer’s instructions carefully and follow all installation and use guidelines.

Can we just appreciate Best Store US and Bob Dylan for coming through with this in-depth post!! I have the nuna relx base with the pipa rx .. now I’m torn on which convertible car seat to get!! Ah! They are all worth their features!
We love our Nuna Pipa Rx! It is super easy to install in the car and I love how easy to use the buckles are to secure my daughter!!
We had a drunk driver hit us head on doing over 60 mph, then 3 months later had a full size moving van rear end our vehicle doing 50+ mph (yes, it was the replacement from the first accident), and both times our children (6-9 months, 2 and 4) came out without a scratch thanks to our Chevrolet Traverses and Diono carseats. We still drive a Traverse and have continued using only Diono seats.
I’d like to see a post on actual safety performances in a collision. Something like car collision grades. From one source I read, the nuna pipa isn’t the best performing (70ish/100). Chicco and peg perego received a top grades (90ish/100).
We purchased two diono we were a bit nervous about it bc it wasn’t a recognizable name. However it’s amazing. We have the newer version, full steel, folds, super heavy and many layers of protection for our twins.
Graco 4Ever is the best it goes from newborn to 120lbs booster.. rear fasting until 40 lbs and can be used with isofix and seatbelts. plus it is super sturdy
Good job Eli! Hope you and the Best Store US team are doing well : )
Really wanted to know about the cironA (swivel convertible) does the rotation impact another car seat installed in the middle?
What convertible car seat would you recommend for hot weather? My son runs warm and hates his car seat ????
What your not showing in this post is the front driver/passenger seats. When you set the infant seats at 45 degree angle it really pushes its overall length out and starts to seriously encroach on the front seats. With twins it becomes worse as both mummy and daddy in the front are now scrunched up to make way for seats in back. As the driver I am now forced to drive in an uncomfortable position much closer to the steering wheel than I want. Possible solution is basically don’t go out for first few months which is fine at the moment due to COVID anyway.
I wish you gave perspective on how much room was left in rear facing reclined position. Like if you had a font seat there also to show how much room these seats actually take up. That would be amazing. But I do like and appreciate your posts.
What is the most compact seat front to back? For rear facing
Totally snagging the Clek Liing- Thank you for your review! 🙂
We got a Graco and man it sucks??. I wish I had checked it before the week Were expecting. The base was easy to get tight but man its hard to click in and out. I am a certified installer and I hate it??
Please please do a booster seat post. Love your posts!
LATCH systems are in cars newer than around 2002. New car seats do not come with locking clips that I was told was needed to use when installing a car seat with a seat belt (no LATCH).
Can you please do a post on the best 360 spinning car seats please!
Apart from the Mesa, which ones are nontoxic?
I have the Cybex Sirona and LOVE IT! Not in the post but I love pretty much everything about it
Can you review the different rotating car seats?
Hi. Are there any new born car seats you can recline in the car on the base.
Thank you
Does the Pipa next go into a normal Pipa or RELX base?
I would like to know how to remove the Dinio 3QXT seat cover to wash it.
Please do the booster seat post soon!
Good content but I feel like he’s choosing the car seats on looks and more features but not so much on the safeties one ??, because I guarantee , there are more safest car seats out there specially for booster type , and also would like to see numbers from tests from ADAC or any other Test Companies ??
Hi i am looking for a convertible and i would like to know which one is the number 1 regarding safty.. thanknyou in advance
100% guarantee you’d get better reviews if you kept in mind that people are envisioning their first borns in these seats and when you throw them around or set them down without care, you’re doing it to their/our imaginary kids. Just a thought from someone who knows a little about messaging. Great posts.
Been waiting for this post!
can you make a review on car seats for toddler? thanks
“check your backseat, they’re there, I promise.” He says assuming everyone has a car newer than 2002 when it became a legal obligation in vehicles.
Any thought on the Uppababy Knox?
Love this
I’m in the market for two infant car seats that must be compatible with the thule sleek. But I can’t seem to find anything in girl colors I will be needing 2, 1 for a boy and 1 for a girl as we will be having twins . Do you have any recommendations light weight and up to 30lbs would be great also thanks
So cybex thinks phones are more important than babies to parents so they would forget their child but not their phone???
Nuna pips lite is the best for an infant. Super light
100% recommend Doona
A Cybex Cloud Q in a 2021 post?? I mean how long do they sell the lighter follow-up Cloud Z already? I think it’s 2 years now…
Is there any car seats for 80 pounds in harness mode
What about the Peg Perego?
